Syrian, from Homs; seeking Undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering and is enrolled at Lebanese International University.
Nelson Mandela says that courage is triumph over fear and I can prove it. My name is Abdullah Alobid, a Syrian refugee and a student. My life changed the day war broke out. I was just a child who didn’t understand destruction, but I could feel the fear in my mother’s eyes and the sadness in my father’s voice.
We lived in a small, loving home. One day, we had to leave everything behind—our house, our memories, even our old family photos. We left hoping the war would end soon, but it didn’t. The pain grew with time.
What hurt the most wasn’t just leaving home, but my mother’s illness. She had a brain tumor, and treatment wasn’t easy to find. I watched her grow weaker each day, and I felt helpless. I was too young to do anything, yet I wished I could take her pain away.
My father tried to stay strong, but I could see the weight he carried. After many struggles, we moved to Lebanon, hoping to find help for my mother and a chance for a better future.
Life as a refugee hasn’t been easy. I study and dream, carrying with me a homeland in my heart, a mother who was my hero, and a history full of pain and patience. My journey is long, but I believe that all this struggle will one day lead to light.
Why Would Donors Fund You?
I’m a passionate learner and active volunteer with certified training in nursing, robotics, electricity, and IT. Backed by trusted organizations like MAPS, NRC, and CIS, I’ve turned challenges into motivation. Supporting my education means investing in someone who believes in growth, serves the community, and turns knowledge into lasting, meaningful impact.
How Do You Plan to Payback?
I've always believed that volunteering is the most valuable thing a person can offer our time. Through it, we can do things money alone can’t achieve. After graduation, I hope to start an organization to educate children. I grew up in a poor residential community in Lebanon, where families couldn’t support their kids’ education. I still live near them, and every time I see those children, I remember my own past and theirs, which was often even harder. This memory drives my passion to give back and make a lasting difference.
Volunteer Work/Social Capital
I volunteered extensively with MAPS, collecting and packing food supplies for families in need in Lebanon. I also contributed to an Islamic organization, organizing dental care campaigns for Syrian children. At the Lebanese International University, I participated in two fundraising events, selling products and holding games to raise fund one for an orphanage and the other for Gaza.
What Have You Done to Improve Yourself? Awards and Achievements
I believes in lifelong learning. I’ve earned multiple awards and certificates, with dozens of volunteer hours in universities and community centers. Volunteering is my passion, I leave a mark wherever I go. I’ve trained in nursing, electricity, robotics, and computer skills. I always say, “Knowledge helps in life; specialization helps in both life and work.” All my achievements are certified by trusted organizations like MAP’s, NRC, and the CIS Institute. I strive to grow, give back, and inspire others through education and service.
